Integrative Skills
This is a lab and simulated course that integrates theoretical learning across the program into practical experience. The objective of this course is to provide real-world simulated scenarios that incorporate as many of the CCA competencies and skills across a full process/task sequence. The instructor’s main objective is to connect the theoretical learning from Course 8 Body Structures & Functions into application to draw the connections from theory into practice. This is a test-try learning environment where the instructor is encouraged to pause, change a status/condition/illness/need, and resume during a scenario. Instructors can also pause and restart scenarios.
This course is segmented into 3 parts to provide an integrative skill development approach to learning. Each part is dispersed across the program to provide instructors with the time required to develop scenarios and prepare the lab environment.
Part I
In Part 1 the instructor develops one short scenario that is either a common/consistent challenge for learners in the program OR a scenario based on the overall performance of the cohort at hand. This is the shortest out of all the scenarios due to the other required objectives. In Part 1 learners will follow up from the LEAP-PSW certificate. Learners will then complete a Self-Assessment prepared by the instructor and participate in their first scenario.
Part 2
Part 2 focuses on integrating Course 8 and the self-Assessment feedback from learners into practice with three separate scenarios. Part 2 occurs concurrently in segment 3 of the program which allows educators to schedule any of the three days in this at any time throughout segment 3. They can occur together as a block (3 days in a row) or separately and distributed throughout weekly program delivery. Each scenario is 1-day of Part 2 (3-scenarios for 3 days). The essential skills assessment is completed by the last day of Part 2.
Part 3
Part 3 focuses on debriefing from mentorship placements and providing opportunities for learners to practice skills back in the lab with instructors. Part 3 occurs concurrently at the end of the program in segment 4 which allows educators to schedule either 1 full day (6 hours) or 2 half days (2 days at 3 hours) for mentorship debriefing and targeted practice. Educators schedule Part 3 with placement sites to ensure flexibility for learners to transition to the classroom for either 1 day or 2 half days. The Self-Reflection assignment is due at Part 3 of course 7.
